The Odyssey

I saw this last Saturday and I cannot get over it. It lingers in my brain in a good way.

Christopher Nolan, one of my favorite directors/filmmakers, conveyed the message and intention of the film clearly and in a way that audiences can understand. He is a brilliant visionary of our time.

The movie is perfection. Perfect acting and casting; music and sound effects; graphics and visuals. I love how these visuals strived to be based in realism as they did not use any AI bullshit and they used as little CGI as they could, which is incredible considering how grand the mythical elements of the story are. I have always been interested in Greek and Egyptian mythology, so I was very curious and excited to see and hear how they were going to actualize these mythic elements of this epic Greek story. This film is so immersive: It was emotional just as it was sensuous. In other words, this movie activates the senses in a way that really stands out. You feel it emotionally and through your senses.

The film is perfection. Everyone in the film was incredible. The timing is perfect, especially considering how we are all seeing the cruelty, inhumanity, and on-going senseless wars, the killing of innocent civilians as well as the environment, all of which are devastating our world. The film (and the story) also addresses the end of a empire. It is perfect timing for a story like this to be brought back into the consciousness of people, especially as we are experiencing the collapse of civilization as we knew it. The symbolism and metaphors of the story are made very clear in this adaptation.

I'm not going to get into the story as much because many of us are already familiar with it and because there is so much depth and so many themes that can be analyzed that still resonate with our understanding and observation of humanity (and the lack of it) today. A lot of what resonated with me is discussed in the interview below, which means we all nailed it! The message that was constructed seems to have been understood by audiences. One of the most important lines of the story and in film was the line stating (I'm paraphrasing) how future generations will only focus on the glory of war rather than learn from the mistakes, regrets, and disastrous complacency of Odysseus' actions- which has ringed true. It is disappointing that such a tragic story, filled with lessons to learn, originating from nearly 3,000 years ago is still so very relevant to our "modern" time.

This movie reminded me of how fascinating and timeless this story is. Christopher Nolan and all involved in making this movie really did it justice. This movie is a great visual complement to the original story and everyone was so incredible in it. This is film that I recommend seeing in the theater. I might actually see this one again in theaters!

The Most Badass Movie of the Year: Ballerina

The John Wick film series is my absolute favorite action movie series ever! I even started wearing all black just so I could say, "I'm John Wicking it today" and gesture to my all-black outfit. That was nearly 10 years ago, and I've basically been wearing all black ever since.

This felt like the most violent, intense, and even hard to watch of the John Wick series- and that's saying something! Walking out of the theater felt like getting off a roller-coaster. This movie was definitely thrilling, heart-pumping, and adrenaline-inducing from start to finish. It had breathtaking, brutal action sequences with beautiful, breathtaking scenery in the background. It also maintained its subtle dark comedic moments that made fun of the absurdity of certain over-the-top fight scenes with the unique use of weaponry.

The plot was interesting, and not as predictable as I assumed it would have been. When I first found out about this movie, I wasn't keen on the idea of a John Wick spin-off, but this turned out to be more than just another extension of the movies. Not only do we get to see the John Wick world from a different character's perspective, but this movie also showed new underlying sides of the world that weren't presented in the previous movies. Ballerina also complemented the previous movies with the contrast of how John Wick is always trying to get out of this work and world, while Eve's character is determined to get in. I also really enjoyed the balance and dynamic between these two characters. One of my concerns was that Keanu Reeves wouldn't be in it, but he was, and he didn't overshadow this new character nor did she overshadow his character. The scenes with Ana de Armas and Keanu's characters where so interesting as it related to their place in the organization and in different times portraying how their paths had crossed in time and in the present time of the story.

Seeing this from a female perspective was also really cool and very different. It brought a whole new level of intensity and creativity with fight sequences that felt more realistic and gritty. It also really made me want to learn the John Wick style fighting techniques.

They did really good with this one. And if there will be another John Wick movie... I'll be seeing it in the theater!

I watched all the Mission Impossible movies, and it was quite the ride!

In preparation for Final Reckoning, which was incredible, I watched all the Mission Impossible movies from the start, and I gained so much appreciation for this iconic movie series that brought us the classic theme song we all know and love, as well as the countless re-enactments in several TV shows and movies since its release in 1996.

I grew up watching these movies: the first one, practically on repeat growing up; and starting from Ghost Protocol, I watched the remaining films in the movie theater. Each movie had me on the edge of my seat with its fast-paced, unique, over-the-top classic chase sequences. Sequences that often featured the prominent "Tom Cruise Run" -of course- and usually took place in extremely beautiful locations with breathtaking scenery. The fight sequences are hard-hitting and intense while often happening during a heart-pumping time limit. The eleventh-hour save-the-character, save-the-day, save-the-world moments are plentiful! And those last-second suspenseful sequences got me every time! 🤣

There are too many good things to say about each movie, but I will say each movie is filled with the most incredible and unbelievable action sequences I could not have even predicted to see: from the underwater and airplane scenes in Final Reckoning to the motorcycle stunt in Dead Reckoning; the rock-climbing in MI 2 and in Fallout to the sequences where he's on the side of buildings in MI3 and Rouge Nation; jumping out of planes or from one plane to another, which happened in more than two of the movies!

The suspense, the intrigue, the subtle romances, the action, the comedic moments, and the classic perfection of it all! I mean, what more could you want from an action/adventure series? And they just kept building up each movie with the stunts, thrills, and storylines! It is interesting to see how well these films, not only kept up technology, but were often ahead of time, especially with the first movie. The casting is perfect, and the character dynamics are very well-balanced. It was fun to see these character relationships build over the course of each movie along with the elements of comic relief amongst all of the intensity.

This movie series will always be iconic. And Tom Cruise really went all out with these stunts. The amount of thought, planning, and repetitive, deliberate implementation of these stunts is beyond belief! Absolutely incredible! When watching these behind-the-scenes, and seeing the way Cruise talks about stunts, it is cool to see how passionate he is about making his vision come to life, but it is also hard to tell where the actor/producer Tom Cruise ends and the character Ethan Hunt begins!

One of my favorite things about all of these movies is how the main theme is about believing in yourself and your abilities. Both Ethan's character and Tom Cruise (the man himself) have an unassailable and unwavering belief that whatever they are setting out to accomplish, they can and will accomplish. It is rather inspiring.

In each movie, the team goes from "mission impossible" to "mission accomplished" despite coming up against the most insane and impossible missions, and even though things didn't always go according to the plan. These characters believed that they would pull through, and in that last-minute, sometimes last-second moment, the world is saved. They did it by trusting and believing in themselves, and with strong teamwork, they accomplished the impossible.

It is interesting to observe how there is never a doubt in Ethan Hunt's (or Tom Cruise's) mind- The belief and trust in oneself is the number one thing anyone can learn from watching these movies, which is such an important and empowering message.

I love those scenes when the crew is going over their plan, and (usually in the earlier movies) there may be someone doubting the plan, doubting the fact that success is even possible, while Ethan's character just says, "we are doing this."
